Chaffinch

The Chaffinch is widespread throughout Britain except for the Scottish Highlands. It is most common in woodland areas, although this is a bird that visits gardens. It is estimated that there are as many as 6 million territories in Britain, but during the Winter these figures are increased by the migrant birds that arrive, and these could boost the numbers to as many as 30 million birds. It feeds mainly on seeds and insects and is approximately 15cm in length. The males are quite distinctly coloured with a striking blue head and pink breast.
