0040 Purple Sandpiper

Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima)
The Purple Sandpiper isn't really very Purple looking, although in good sunlight there is a purple-ish sheen to some of the feathers. At 20cm long it can be easily missed foraging amongst rocks for food. The Yellow-Orange legs and base to the bill provide a bit of colour to an otherwise Grey-Brown bird. This is a winter visitor to Britains rocky shores but you can see them on some man made sea defences around the coast. This particular bird is one of a small group seen near Frinton in Essex. One of the best places to see them is Filey Brigg in North Yorkshire.
