Coot

One of our most common waterbirds frequently seen on wide open water such as resevoirs or lakes. Can also be seen feeding on grassy banks. Coots lay approximately 6 - 9 eggs from mid March onwards. The eggs are incubated for 24 days by both parents and the chicks leave the nest a few days after hatching. The chicks become independant after around 8 weeks. It's common for Coots to have 2 broods each year, but occasionally they may produce 3 broods. Coot chicks are surprisingly colourful compared to the adult birds and are worth seeking out around April or May. They are a very common species and are easily recognisable.
