Common Crossbill
Despite its name, this is an uncommon resident of coniferous woodland, where it feeds upon the seeds of spruce and other conifers. It uses its crossed bill to prise open the Spruce cones to get to the seeds within. There are sometimes invasions of these birds from Scandinavia, which boosts the resident British population. Areas in which these birds can be found include Kielder Forest in Northumberland, Grizedale Forest in Cumbria and Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire.
