Bearded Tit

The Bearded Tit is an uncommon reedbed resident of the coastal wetlands of south eastern Britain. In the summer months its diet is mainly insects, but during the winter it is almost entirely dependant on the seed of the Common Reed. Although called the Bearded Tit the facial features show more of a moustache than a beard. Unfortunately, the British breeding population consists of only 500-600 pairs. More of its reedbed habitat is being restored, so hopefully this number will rise. Bearded Tits are very colourful and lively birds, they are real acrobats of the Reedbeds. At just 15cm long, and with plumage that lets them blend in to their surroundings, the Bearded Tit can be difficult to see. They spend a lot of time at the bottom of the reedbed searching out insects and also coming down to the water to drink.
